Celso Machado

Thursday, July 10, 2008 at 6:00

Celso Machado master of ritmos brasileiros, virtuoso guitarist, percussionist and multi-instrumentalist brings joy to his audiences, with his subtle mixture of musical inspiration, irresistible rhythm and inspired lunacy.

Celso Machado’s solo performances transport his audiences through the richness and diversity of Brazilian music, and beyond. While Celso’s music is rooted in the percussive rhythms, harmonies and spirit of Brazil it also reflects his incurable fascination with other world music traditions. He has gained mastery of a vast array of instruments including: the Arab nay, the southern Italian tamburello, Moroccan guembri, and most recently the African kora. These influences blend seamlessly into his own sound; his own unique contribution to the evolution of Brazilian music.

“Celso Machado is a samba school by himself.”

— Caroline Kutter, Les Cahiers de la Guitare, Paris, France (translated)

“A one-man compendium of Brazilian diversity who doubles as a guitarist and percussionist par excellence. Reminiscent of Bobby McFerrin, the multi–talented Machado finds an orchestra–full of ways to use his voice and makes percussion instruments of his entire body: cheeks, mouth, chest, hands and legs – not to mention the various parts of the microphone stand. Yet Machado also showed serious chops as a guitar player with an intricate, high speed solo in which he constantly altered the instruments tuning in mid–flight ...”

— Lawrence B. Johnson in a special to the Detroit News

For over thirty years he has performed on concert stages throughout Brazil, Western Europe, Canada, and in the United States. Celso’s last four solo CDs have been nominated for four Juno Awards which includes his recently released CD, Jogo da Vida, for CBC Records. This year Celso will publish a new set of compositions for guitar with Editions Henry Lemoine and next January/February 2008 he will tour with the Brazilian Guitar Festival curated by Sergio Assad.

Go to Celso Machado’s website to learn more of this creative and exciting performer.

The Showcase Concert is made possible by a generous contribution by Ruben Flores, Classical and Flamenco Guitars.
